Description
Jeju island is Korea's largest island, which besides from having some of the country's most amazing beaches and unique landscapes, is also home to the Republic of Korea's highest mountain, Hallasan. At 1,947.06 meters, Hallasan is an inactive (although not dormant) shield volcano which first formed about 2 million years ago. The island is rich in culture and beautiful flora and fauna, and is regular travel destination.
Rock climbing on the island is relatively still building in popularity, and while there is a strong and consistent group of amazing local climbers, a growing number of expats on the island are popularizing the sport and climbing areas, as compared to the much better known and frequented climbing areas on the mainland.
The rock as a whole is almost always some form of basalt or Jeju volcanic black rock. There are three primary sport climbing areas, although bolting on the island is not widely regulated, and several routes could use re-bolting, or have even been stripped of bolts altogether. 50m of rope and 10-12 quick draws should set you pretty good for any and all sport climbing you'd do here. Bouldering is an easy and more manageable option, with innumerable first ascents and routes available in river beds all over the island. Renting pads is not much of an option here, so it's better to bring your own.
There are two main, although small, climbing gyms in Jeju-si: Move Zone and Fix Boulder.
Getting There
Jeju is a lovely sub-tropical island off the Southern Coast of South Korea. Flights arrive frequently from Seoul, Busan, Shanghai, and other international cities. Having access to a vehicle is seriously preferable for the majority of climbing access.
Given current conditions with COVID-19 entry regulations, all flights arriving to the island are only those from the mainland. This will hopefully change in the near future. There are also ferries, but these take considerably longer to reach the island.
