Description Suggest change

This is a beautiful, secluded national forest area that offers good quality granite with north and northwest-facing domes and cliff bands. The area has a wilderness vibe, with the cascades of the North Fork serenading all of the formations here, and you will likely have the rock to yourself. The gorge is home to a variety of wildlife that does not seem to be shy, particularly the moose. Prairie rattlers have also been seen here. There are quite a few new route possibilities here for the adventurous, as the crack systems are not always continuous. In order of appearance, there is the 500' high Broken Bridge Dome, and 3 distinct cliff bands of significant length (and similar approach): the East Slabs, Sheep Mt. Wall, and the West End. Because creek crossings are required, the best time to climb here is early or late season, since the bridges were washed away in the epic Sept. 2013 floods.

Getting There Suggest change

From US Highway 36 between Lyons and Estes Park, turn south on County Road 47, the Big Elk Meadows Road. After about 3 miles, bear left, and continue another half mile to the Coulson Gulch Trailhead. Hike down the trail through Coulson Gulch, across Higgins Park, and down the drainage to the North Fork of the St. Vrain. Head upstream, and find a way across the creek. Sometimes there are crude bridges made of logs and trees across, sometimes not. Sandals might be something to bring along. The north end of Broken Bridge Dome is directly across the river. There is an old road on the south side that leads a short ways to the next creek crossing, where at low flows, an easy way across presents itself. Continue up the road on the north side another quarter mile or so, and you'll be directly below the East Slabs (across the creek). The next drainage to the west (also across the creek) leads to the prodigious Sheep Mt. Wall. The drainage after that, the West End.
