Description
The Northern Pickets is the grouping of summits around Luna Cirque, between Whatcom Pass in the north and Picket Pass, which divides the two groups. This extremely remote grouping of several knifelike alpine rock summits over hanging glaciers and deep, brushy cirques was first explored in the early 1940s, primarily by Fred Beckey and his partners. Most of the summits involve difficult and unpleasant off-trail travel no matter the approach chosen; most also offer alpine rock and glacier climbing. The highest peak is Fury's west promontory.
Getting There
There are two general approaches to the Northern Pickets. The first begins from Ross Dam; either a boat ride up to the Big Beaver trailhead or a seven-mile walk on the Ross Lake trail to the same place. Hiking several miles up Big Beaver Creek (on a maintained trail) will take you past McMillan Cirque, the Southern Picket access, to Luna Creek, which is fed by the many glaciers of the Northern Pickets. Much brushy, off-trail travel takes you to the head of Luna Cirque, at which most of the summits are reached from. One can make a loop if being picked up by boat by hiking down Little Beaver Creek.
The other approach involves a long hike from north of Mt Shuksan up tributaries of the Chilliwack River, eventually reaching Whatcom Pass. Circling around the Big Beaver-Little Beaver Peak ridge will lead you to the cirque.
