Description

Tier 2 is a fantastic cluster of large boulders with a variety of grades and climbing styles.

You will know you have reached Tier 2 when you see the obvious crescent half moon boulder problem on the outskirts of the boulder cluster. Moving into the cluster provides plenty of good arete and slab climbs as well as powerful compression boulders and crimpy face climbing. Grades range from V0 slabs to V6 highballs. Landings for each boulder are flat and do not require many pads.

Routes are re-discovered every day and it is advised to bring a wire brush to scrub some lichen if you see a line that is inspiring!

We have reached out to local climbers about potential FA's in the past but currently have little information. Route names are temporary and please leave a comment if you have knowledge about existing names and first ascentionists. The bouldering potential here is endless and more people should come out and climb on these fantastic blocks!

Getting There

Tier 2 cluster is located above Tier 1 (Wow! we do get creating with names!) above the main Boulder Loop Hiking Trail boulders that you see from the kiosk. The approach takes around 5-10 minutes depending on the approach, which is shown clearly on the Tier 1 sketch map.

Approach 1 - Easiest and safest with pads on your back.  Walk into Tier 1 and continue uphill to the cliffband at its top. Walk along the cliffband uphill to the right, passing a cairn (see Approach 2) until the cliff band ends, make a hard left turn and walk back to the left (150-200 ft) above the cliff band until a flat, grassy area is reached. The "Crescent Moon Boulder" and the "entrance" to Tier 2 is on your left.

Approach 2 - As with approach 1 but at the cairn take a left up a ledge-ramp.  The first move or two may be a bit off balance, especially with pads. Above the ledge, walk back to the left 100 +/- ft to the grassy area.

Approach 3 - "Directissima" - Look for a clean(ed), white slab on the cliff band. 25+/- ft to its left, scramble up a corner past a big tree directly to the grassy area. I took the "right of the tree route". You should be able to hand pads up to someone who has climbed up first to the grassy area.

Finally, An alternate approach can be done by hiking along the boulder loop trail to the hikers junction. Take the left trail and hike uphill until you see a short blank cliff face. Take a left here and scramble up the low angle slab. Walk down and left until you see the crescent moon shaped boulder. This approach is actually quite a bit longer.
