Description Suggest change

This is an extremely scenic area with a wide variety of climbing opportunities. From shorter rope climbs to lowball boulder problems, the motivated climber could spend days out here! This area definitely has a long history of climbing but the history hasn’t been passed on other than word of mouth. This page starts the process of data collection for historical as well as climbing reasons and not to erase the history but make homage to the climbers who came before! If you have any info on original names, lines, or any related ideas PLEASE reach out and corrections will be made! Thanks and have fun and be safe out there!

The “Rocky Ridge Rampage” happened here in June 2022 when several dedicated and motivated West Virginia boulderers spent a day and some even spent days out there cleaning, climbing, and documenting well over 100 boulder problems from V-easy to V8.

This area is remote and can be extreme! The weather can change in minutes, the wildlife is wild, the trail is long and rugged, and no water! This is a serious place so take it serious and be prepared!

Getting There Suggest change

2 hour approach

You can access the Rocky Ridge Trail from Forest Road 80 or from junctions with the Raven Ridge Trail, Blackbird Knob Trail, Harman Trail, Big Stonecoal Trail and the Breathed Mountain Trails.

The standard approach is from Bear Rocks parking and head west on Bear Rocks Trail to the Raven Ridge Trail and then the Rocky Ridge Trail! It takes a solid 2 hours if you are in reasonable good shape! But expect longer!  The first set of boulders you encounter are the North boulders then the Trailside boulder and finally the Main Area which starts at the obvious trailside beast Morphosaurus and ends at the Canaan Crack!  This is adventure alpine bouldering be safe out there…
