Description

The Big Falls Promuntory is a high ridge rising from the canyon bottom NNE of the overlook parking lot and its jutting end is where Box Elder Creek turns from going north at the Big Falls to then driving west for a short distance and more falls. Below the NE end of the Promuntory is the Big Falls of Box Elder Creek. The falls has few good viewing spots as it drops into kind of a 3 sided box an exits left -- fury, noise and foam during high water. From the begining of the Promuntory (which has no quartzite formation over it) one has easy access to the climbs on the local quartzite walls and easy access to the creek bottom just below where the Big Falls water exits after pour over. During low water one can cross the creek here to the two 3 pitch climbs. There may still be a cable to use for assisting a crossing during high water. Above 700cfs creek flow the cable may be in the water? There are 3 or so routes on the up stream side of the Promuntory that is above the falls. Access to the bottom is by rappelling a route.

Getting There

From the overlook parking lot head eastward downhill to the top of the first cliff band. The formation under your feet here is the quartzite band. Follow this cliff edge north to a side gulch and just a short ways along the gulch side is the crossing trail. In the bottom of the gulch take the trial on the north side that goes downward to the base of the quartzite formation. Follow the shelf that at the base of the quartzite northward and then eastward. The Promuntory Ridge running NE which has no quartzite top begins where the quartzite band turns north. The Promuntory ends precipitously very close to the west side of the Big Falls below. But the falls cannot be seen from here.
