Description

Rest Stop Cliffs is a series of cliff bands that see fairly little traffic, probably due to their short (< 50' tall) stature. Despite this, some of the routes are quite good and span a range of grades. If you've climbed everywhere else on Donner, this area might be worth a visit.

Also, many of the routes have anchors that can be accessed from the top, making this a relatively toprope-friendly area. The separate walls are numbered as they would be encountered from left-to-right.

Getting There

Park at the PCT trailhead, at the Boreal exit. Follow the PCT access trail until you pass a small pond on your right, then look for a faint but worn climbers trail on the far side of the pond. If you end up joining the actual PCT you've gone too far.

Follow the climbers trail through relatively flat ground to a small gully on your right side. Continue uphilll, following the gulley until it levels off and then turn right and ascend a grassy slope. There was a cairn at the top of this slope as of August 2019. Keeping the small cliff band on your right side, continue on until you see a talus field. The Fern Grotto is the first wall encountered on the approach.
