Description
Despite the sheer amount of rock, much of the stone along CR 550 presents itself in the unfortunate form of slabby, rounded domes. Tucked away in the middle of the swamp lies a vein of granite that, against all odds, was very prone to eroding into overhanging features. This area is home to the greatest density of hard rock climbing potential in the U.P. As it is in the middle of the Swamp, the bugs are horrible making fall, winter, and spring the best times to hit this incredible area.
Getting There
From the Wetmore Pond lot, take the west trail to Hogsback (white blazes). When it crosses a small stream (0.5 miles) turn left onto the multi-use trail (the railroad grade). Hike the old railroad past Wetmore Pond for ¾ of a mile. Turn right just before the bridge and head up a hill. Ride the ridge for a few hundred feet before dipping downhill, crossing a small creek, and climbing another ridge. Summit the ridge and head down a gully, turning right at the base. Hike another hundred feet until the swamp comes into view. Some areas will require you to hike through the swamp (The Dream, Swamp Thing Roof, Rocklandia), others will stay to the right (Swamp Wall, Feldsparring, The In-Between).
