Description
The Peaks Crag is a stunning row of volcanic Dacite with slabs, steep pillars, laser cut dihedrals, sweeping arêtes, and wild headwalls. Certain sectors of slow cooled stone show characteristics of Rhyolite. A mix of trad and sport routes are spread out across the colorfully streaked and often vibrant wall. Large Ponderosa pines and towering Aspens line the base and provide a perfect backdrop for a days climbing. During the fall color change this place quickly becomes one of the most beautiful walls in Flagstaff. The crag has aged and matured in the sense that hundreds of ascents have both subdued much of the sharpness, as well as most of the brittle flakes. The routes feel pretty clean at this point, however if you stray to far off the beaten path, you may encounter somewhat questionable rock here and there.
There are 60+ routes with grades that run from 5.7 to 5.14- and everything in between. I’ve split this wall into two sections to correspond with the annual Peregrine Falcon closure boundary; The North End and the South End. Only the North End is open to climbing during the seasonal closure. The closure period typically runs from March 15th through the middle of July after the chicks have fledged, though officially its through the middle of August until rescinded. See the access issue for more up to date information.
