Description
The Manzano Mountains are located south of Albuquerque in central New Mexico. The east side is more popular with visitors and has established campgrounds and hiking trails. In general, the range's ruggedness and lack of easy access explains why there isn't more established climbing. Rock found in the range includes limestone, quartzite and gneiss. 37,000 acres of the range are set aside for the Manzano Mountains Wilderness and the area is managed by the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest.
Getting There
This mountain range has numerous access points. The west side of the Manzano Mountains is accessed by exiting I-25 at the town of Los Lunas or the town of Belen. The east side can be accessed by heading south from I-40 on NM Highway 337 from Tijeras or by exiting I-25 and heading east on NM Highway 60 from Belen.
