In addition to visiting the numerous natural and cultural sites throughout the region (e.g., Canyon of the Ancients or Ute Mountain Tribal Park), the mountain biking mecca of Phil's World is arguably the biggest outdoor draw in the area. A number of scattered climbs can be found throughout the region though, and while not world class crags, these areas are great for locals looking for a quick session (or visitors looking to spice things up).
Cortez is located in southwestern Colorado at the junction of US Highways 160 and 491. Cortez is a 45 minute drive west of Durango, CO along US-160, 2 hours south of Moab, UT along US-191/491, and 4 hours northwest of Albuquerque, NM along US-550/491.
While there are a couple of bike/ski shops and an general outdoor supply store (High Desert Life Outdoors & Exchange) in Cortez, there are no shops that reliably carry climbing gear as yet. The nearest gym and stores with climbing equipment are in Durango.
There are several good restaurants in the various towns, as well as numerous breweries. Some of the most enjoyable include:
- WildEdge Brewing Collective
- Main St Brewery & Restaurant
- Mancos Brewing Company
- Fenceline Cider
- Dolores River Brewery
