Description

Sunset Boulders is a cluster of several boulders ranging from 8 to 15 feet or so in height. Rock is decent to poor quality schist like most rock in the branch brook tributary gully, only a couple of the boulders have climbable lines at the moment for that reason. The rock is also typically pretty sharp and can exhibit shedding with freeze thaw cycles. Afternoon sun shines on the bulk of the problems on the Lowball Boulder & The Sleepy Time Boulder. Great place to grab a couple of sends after work or as some cool downs at the end of the day.

Getting There

Sunset boulders sit atop of a gully between Route 6 and Route 8 east of Black Rock State Park & North of Leatherman's Cave. To get there Park in Black Rock State Park or the hiker's pull off where the Mattatuck trail bisects route 6. Follow the blue Mattatuck Trail east towards Leatherman's cave overlook. After a third of a mile or so when you see small hiking slabs transition left to follow the climber's path that skirts the hillside. Follow that path for a couple hundred yards or so. The path will turn right (due south) uphill to under the overlook, instead here turn left & travel opposite on the smaller path (due north) to the sunset boulders. Sunset Boulder cluster is the uppermost boulder cluster that sit west of a small stream which flows into branch brook. As always, tread lightly.
