Description

The closest desert alpine to Reno. Its the big rock on the skyline when headed North from Spanish Springs. It's a lot of steep loose hiking to get up there (unless you have some gnarly 4X4) but worth it for the view. Isn't that why we do it?

Needle Rock has been climbed all sorts of way for the last 30 or 40 years. I'm not entirely sure of its history so please shed some light if you know of anything.

Getting There

There is a dirt road that can get you right up to the rock but I've always approached from the canyon below. Instead of taking the left up Pig Rock Canyon, take the next left instead and follow it as close as you can get. Hike the steep sandy hill to the right of Needle Rock, find the dirt road that will take right to the rock. Roughly 1 to 1.5 hours hike.
