Access Issue: Neighborhood Parking
Details
Please be mindful of the neighbors on Big Rock Lake Road. Do not park along the road, generate excessive noise in the parking lot or at the cliff, or camp out. If the parking is full, use the spot at the intersection of Preston McDaniel and Nine Times Roads. This is a neighborhood, drive slow and be courteous. Violating one of these rules is an easy way to get the cliff shutdown for everyone.
Description
With a variety of problems (around 400 currently established) from V0- to V9, Big Rock is one of the biggest and best boulder fields in South Carolina. There are many bouldering areas all over Big Rock Mountain and the Nine Times Forest, some with a 5 minute approach and some require over a mile approach and are easier accessed from other parking areas along E Preston McDaniel Rd. All of these Big Rock Boulders are accessed from the Climber's Parking Lot found within the Big Rock Lake Community and are located on the south side of Big Rock Mountain.
Getting There
From the parking area inside Big Rock Lake Community, follow the trail to its split soon after the trailhead...
Left fork will lead you to the Middle Boulders near the top of the log steps and then through the Classic Boulders soon after, clustered around where the trail passes through a tight constriction between 2 lowball boulders, before ending on the Shamans Trail and the Lower Shaman Boulders before going up the step gulley leading to the base of the Lower Shaman Wall...from here you can connect to the Climber's Trail Boulders and the Summit Trail by going left or hit the Main Wall Boulders by going right.
Right fork will take you to the Eggland's Best Boulders and bottom of the X Boulders, via a small trail that branches off towards the right near the beginning of the log steps just a few minutes from the fork, before walking through the Parking Lot Boulders centered near the first cliff and roped route on the trail, followed by the X Boulders or X Wall Boulders at the base of the routes on the X Wall to the right, then the Astral Boulders after climbing up through the constriction with a rope assist and near the Flowering Hominid Wall, the Main Wall Boulders are down the scramble from Flowering Hominid and below the Main Wall...at the bottom of the scramble and in front of the Main Wall, a trail cuts left before the Hobbit Boulder and goes through more Main Wall Boulders before reaching the base of the Lower Shaman Wall...the second trail to the left near the middle of the Main Wall leads to the top of the Lower Shaman Wall, the Shaman's Cave Boulder (also called the Balanced Rock or Balanced Boulder) and then to the base of the Upper Shaman Wall and the Upper Shaman Boulders before heading down the hill a little further to the Climber's Trail Boulders...staying straight at the Main Wall and up the trail beside the Main Wall, you'll reach the Lower Summit Boulders before following the Summit Trail up to the Upper Summit Boulders before reaching the summit of Big Rock and the small set of Backside Boulders just past the summit on a faint trail...Branching off near the top of the Lower Summit Boulders towards the left/away from the climbing areas is the old faint and grown up original Approach Trail from the backside of the mountain with the Second Ridge Boulders and farthest First Ridge Boulders (which can also be accessed near the Man Of Steel Boulder in the Lower Summit Boulders).
