This is where the climbing started in Sinks. The Tensleep Sandstone formation is exposed from the mouth of the canyon, till replaced by Madison Limestone above the Rise of the Popo Agie. Beautiful texture and hard patinas are interspersed by sandier, dustier areas of stone. A good sandstone climb has continuous tacky grips and firm cracks, some even have glacial scrubbing without grease, guano or choss. Many of the routes have a thin, 4m band, of Fossiliferous Limestone band to negotiate through.  There are many good trad climbs here (such as the ever popular Gunky) along with some "horror shows" that probably haven't been climbed in years.

The Sandstone Buttress is by far the most popular crag and has a very short approach.

Above and across from the Sandstone Buttress, removable protection climber's will find challenges on the sunny Rise Wall and Rise Buttress, and the long and 80m tall, shady, Grade II Wall across the Middle Fork.

If you really want to climb routes at the sandstone pick up a copy of the guidebook as there is not that much documented on MP.
