Description

These large sandstone boulders range from 15 to 25 feet in height. They lie just off both sides of Bear Creek Road under a dense forest canopy of old growth hemlock and Douglas-fir. There are about ~30 boulder problems in the main area, which is composed of a half dozen large boulders 100 feet downhill from the road. There's a well established trail too. Most of the stuff in this little area has been cleaned and done, but bringing a wire brush is advised, as it's Oregon and the moss grows quickly. There's currently nothing too hard (<= v8), but there's potential for much more on the dozens of untouched boulders downhill from the rock formation that cradles the main area.

This little zone has been climbed on since at least the mid 2000s, but I don't know any of the 'real' names of the problems (if they were even given any). As a work-around, I've tried to be as generic as possible in the naming, and if you know any information about FAs in the area, I'm more than happy to change names/lines.

In general, this area is a sweet spot for beginner/moderate level climbers, or anyone trying to run a nice circuit. The rock as comfortable as it gets, and is a treat to climb on if you've never been to Chattanooga/Callahans/Font/etc.

There are also two established 20 to 25 foot crack climbs at the boulders ranging from 5.9 to 5.10a.

While in the area, some of the recommended stops are the Lighthouse Bakery and one of the many wineries located in the vicinity of Umpqua.

Getting There

Bear Creek is outside the community of Umpqua, about 1:10 from Eugene or 40 minutes from Roseburg. Follow directions for the pin up a steep logging road, and park at a small pullout on the side of the road. Look dowhill and you'll see a trail.
