Description
Another often overlooked zone at Cowell, the Hood has long been missing the attention it deserves. There's no question why: up until 2019, this area only had 4 5.12s and no documented boulder problems. This barrier to entry is slowly being stripped away as new routes are developed and documented. With it's short approach and variety of styles and rock types, the Hood has something to offer for everybody.
Getting There
Take Highway 7 to the town of Cowell and turn east onto County Rd 1204 (Cowell Road). Follow this dirt road for 3.8 miles until you reach Hudson Mountain Road (these road names have a tendency to change) on your right. Follow this road past the Hudson Mountain climbing area for 1.3 miles and park at any of the pullouts on the side of the road. Look for a cairn on the north side of the road marking the start of the trail. Follow the trail for 3 minutes until it drops you into the cliff line. From here, head right for the sport/trad or left for the boulders.
Be careful if you continue on the dirt road past the hood. It tends to get very muddy after a rain. Don't get stuck down there.
