Description
Electric Peak located in the Grenadiers of the San Juan Mountains. There is a very large ice floe situated above 10,000’ on its northern aspect.
Getting There
The north face of Electric Peak is accessed by the Elk Creek section of the Colorado Trail east of the Animas River.
From the town of Silverton, take US Hwy 550 southwest 5.5 miles, and park at the trailhead for the Colorado Trail at Molas Park (it’s the trailhead for pack animals, not the one at Molas Pass). The parking is just south of Molas Lake and is on the south side of the road. Descend the trail to the Animas River. Cross the river, and continue down the tracks to the Elk Creek Trailhead. Continue up the Elk Creek Trail, and at the third avalanche debris pile, head towards the creek. Follow a faint trail between the debris and the creek until you have passed the debris. Stay by the creek on the left side (north) working through alder brush and open meadows until you reach the creek bed on the south side of Elk Creek that allows access to Electric Avenue. Cross Elk Creek, and continue up 1000’ of creek bed, bushwhacking, and scree to the base of the floe.
