Description Suggest change

The Sykes guidebook ("The Notches") lists 18 climbs on Lower Primate and another 3 on Gorilla Pile. The starred climbs are: Neanderthal 5.10 b/c *** ,  Evolution 5.8 ** ,  Curious George Goes to Rumney 5.7 * , Young Gun 5.11 c/d **, and Gorilla Grip  5.10 c/d **.

This area was subject of a forest fire in the autumn of 2017. You may encounter charred trees and BEWARE OF NYLON RAP ANCHORS ON TREES and BOLTS. The prudent will replace!.

The approach involves crossing the Lost River, (In mid-summer, usually not much more than a 10ft-wide trickle on gravel) so these cliffs may be best climbed in the "dry season".

Getting There Suggest change

Driving west on Rt 112 you pass enter the White Mountain National Forest at a large sign on the right. 0.45 miles beyond this, on the right (north) is a green electric box (# 6488) on an embankment.

Park completely off the road opposite this, or in any of the nearby gravel or paved pull-offs.

Enter the woods at the electric box. The path soon reaches an old railroad bed (cairn) then heads down left, then back right through a swampy area and on to the river. Cross the river.

Continue to, and cross, a smaller brook; then look for a logging road up to the right. This leads to a boulder field and Lower Primate Wall. More exact directions and map are given in the Sykes guidebook.
