Description
A beautiful peak deep in the Sierra. Not to be confused with Seven Gables North (aka Peak 12,600+) which has seen a lot more technical climbing. First climbed in 1894, this 13,160' peak is class 2 - 3 from the north, west, and south. The east side of the peak holds more interest to climbers and has undeveloped potential as of this writing.
Getting There
From the east: the best approach begins at the Pine Creek Pass trailhead and gains over 4000 feet in about 13 miles. Follow the Pine Creek Pass trail past Upper Pine Lake and take the turn toward Honeymoon Lake. Continue into Granite Park and cross the crest at Granite Bear Pass (about 12,400). This pass is south of Italy Pass, east of Black Bear Lake, and right next to Granite Park Spire.
Head west into the Bear Lakes area. This is a beautiful zone, please help keep it that way by following LNT practices. You'll be traveling cross-country, avoid hiking and camping on plants. Pass Big Bear Lake on the north and Little Bear Lake on the south. If you're only heading to Seven Gables, trend southwest past some tarns and drop down to Vee Lake. Follow it's outlet down to the East Fork of Bear Creek. Now straightforward cross-country travel leads uphill to the peak. If you're looking to also climb Seven Gables North head more directly west from Little Bear Lake for a centrally located camp.
From the west: I haven't done this approach. Some information is available from this Supertopo thread. It sounds like it's 17 miles. If you've done it and are willing to write something up please use the "Improve This Page" tool.
