Description
Welcome to Working Class Wall, a new sport climbing area below the Royal Columns. Since it’s your first day at the new job site we’ve got a couple things to cover before we can get to work:
- First of all, you’ll probably want to put that helmet on. These are new routes and rock-fall does happen. Even-worse, those dog-gone elites at the Royal Columns sometimes kick stuff off to wake you up when you’re nappin’ on the job. Keep your head up and your eyes peeled whether you’re climbin’ or belayin’ since there are more than a few occupational hazards out here.
- Second, there ain’t no short-cut to the Royal Columns. If you’re tryin’ to get to the top from here, you’re takin’ the long way. You best go back through the fence and around on the existing trail. Trying to suck straight up to the top dogs will erode your credibility, as quickly as the ground beneath your feet. Respect your fellow laborers who built these trails and use em!
- And finally, those biners at the top are for lowering! Don’t let the boss man catch you top-roping on em, ya hear me!
Now that we got that boring safety stuff out of the way, let’s get down to business. The climbs here aren’t long, but the days will be. Your 60m rope will be plenty to get the job done. The learning curve is steep, and so are a couple of the routes. Most of em’ though tend to be closer to vertical or slightly overhang about 5 to 10 degrees. You’ll be workin’ outside, so expect to be in the sun after about 2 pm in the middle of summer. We recommend gettin’ here early if it's a hot one. I know you’re wonderin’ about the pay, and honestly it ain’t great, but there’s plenty of new routes to be put up if that’s your thing. Now lastly I gotta tell you about the benefits package. Just kiddin’ we don’t got no benefits, but what we do got is a handfull of new routes with unique holds, engaging movement, and the easiest approach in the Tieton. This job ain’t for everyone, but I think you’ve got what it takes. Oh yeah, and look out for those snakes!
Getting There
Find your way to the Oak-Creek Wildlife Area. Park in this lot with a Northwest Forest Pass or adjacent to the river on highway 12 (note that there have been break-ins on the highway, Do Not leave valuables in your car). Cross the bridge over the river and hang a right. Instead of going through the gate as you do to approach the columns, head left between a fence post and a rock, and follow the trail to the base of the cliff. The approach trail contours below the cliff before climbing to a short rock-staircase that leads up to the base of the Underclass Overhang. Much time and effort has been put into making the trail and belay areas as durable and erosion resistant as possible. Please help us in these efforts by staying on the trail and limiting impact to the existing belay platforms.
