Description

Ormes Peak has a small and secluded summit capped by about 100' of beginner friendly rock. At 9,727', the summit views of Pike's Peak and surrounding areas are spectacular. This is a very easy access, yet fairly rugged place once climbing. Bring a helmet and expect some scrambling, loose rock, and dirt/lichen when climbing here. It is a fun, mini-adventure crag for beginners looking to place gear. The main walls face mostly west and the base of the wall gets shade most of the day, making this a great summer crag for anyone living in Woodland Park or Colorado Springs.

Getting There

Head south from Woodland Park or north from Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs on Rampart Range Road (300). Turn on to Road 303, follow until a major fork, and head right up the hill continuing on Road 303. After about 4 miles from leaving Road 300, you will see Ormes Peak on the left. Keep an eye out as the road brings you closest to the peak, you'll want to park near here. If you have a 4wd with high-clearance, you might be able to drive up an early left turn onto the main ridge and trail. We found a single car pulloff just up the road from the closest drainage and trail to the crag (see the photo). We then hiked back along the road (~0.2 miles) to where it made a left turn and hiked right through a drainage and faint single-track headed uphill towards the peak which will be somewhat visible through the trees at this point. A nice cairn marked social trail brings you just to the right of the main rock face. This is a short approach, ~15-20 minutes. See the photos.

Descent

From the summit, head south and either take the easy forest/boulder pile gully scramble or head a bit further left of the gully for a cairned trail down the back side of the formation. There are no fixed anchors on this crag, and shouldn't be. Anchor-building opportunities abound.
