Description
Tuckerman Ravine is perhaps one of New England's most famous locations. Not just among climbers either, it's up there with Cape Cod and Lake Winnipesaukee. For many, climbing and or skiing Tuckerman Ravine is a rite of passage. This glacial ravine offers ice in the early season and moderate to steep snow in mid-winter to spring. While it may not stack up well with Huntington Ravine as a mountaineering location alone, it makes up for it with endless opportunities for steep skiing.
Getting There
From AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center off Route 16, hike the Tuckerman Ravine Trail to Hermit Lake Shelter. From here you can see the whole ravine. If weather or conditions are unfavorable, turn around here. If you are climbing on the Boott Spur side, cross the Shurburne Ski Trail and take the uphill spur trail to Hillman's Highway. if continuing into the ravine proper, aka "The Bowl", continue up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail which takes you directly to the floor. Be aware that all Tuckerman Ravine routes present avalanche danger, the lower reaches of The Bowl and Hillman's expose you to multiple avalanche paths as well as ice and rockfall danger.
Descent: Skiers must descent via the Sherburne Ski Trail. Winter mountaineers and ice climbers can descend Lion's Head Winter Route to Tuckerman Ravine Trail, or descend an easy gully to Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Be aware of skier traffic from above if descending on foot, which is almost inevitable.
