Description
The Oak Creek Canyon Overlook has been a cherished Flagstaff crag for generations. This somewhat broken down, columnar basalt area features a multitude of moderate trad routes, with only a few test pieces. The main wall saw its first aid routes in the late 1960’s but was quickly turned into a 1970’s and 80’s stomping ground by many legends of the day.
With a fifteen minute drive time from Flagstaff and just a couple minute walk to the top of the wall, this place is perfect for quarter, half, or full days. This four season crag even has four season parking and the southeast aspect makes it climable in all but the most wintery of conditions. The wall goes into the shade around 2:00 in the afternoon.
There are no fixed anchors anywhere on the Overlook Wall. If leading, bring a lead line and a rigging/rappel line. Every route listed here can be top roped, however 99% of them have been lead on natural gear for decades.
A couple other areas such as Davy Jones Locker and The Overlooked Area can be found by traversing the rim to the east.
Getting There
You can park in the paved lot, but if you plan on staying later than 4:30 in the afternoon, you will want to park across the Hwy, as they lock the Overlook gates at that time. It is not uncommon to hear of people getting locked in so plan accordingly.
There are restrooms and water available during hours of operation.
