Description

With a keen eye, easily seen from Highway 33 driving toward Howe the Saddle's Horn is a 300' tower located on the southern end of the Lemhi Range within Salmon-Challis National Forest (well outside of the Black Canyon WSA). Perched high on the steep ridge line that separates Middle and East canyons leading up towards Saddle Mountain the Saddle's Horn is composed of sharp limestone similar to that of Box canyon and the Fins albeit more chossy. The tower will likely remain a very remote destination for the adventurous spirit because of its approach, the defiant will be rewarded with great views and a summit.-" A pinnacle is worth five walls!" -Layton Kor

Getting There

VEHICLE: Use modern mapping methods to drive toward the town of Howe Idaho (also the best location for a weather forecast, you don't want to be cornered by an electrical storm up there). Take a right or left depending on what direction you are traveling from on 1330W heading north. Stay straight for 4 miles on this paved road till it turns left and turns to dirt, a very short distance after this turn take a right on a smaller dirt road, cross the canal, and take a left on another dirt road follow it for 1.4 miles and take a right. Follow this road straight on through into Middle canyon till the end of the road by a small place to turn around. Should be passable in a vehicle with moderate clearance, you might get pretty close in a sedan but it wouldn't like it.

ON FOOT: This is the grueling part, there are undoubtedly many approach routes but this one does the trick. From the parking spot look up to the east and locate a gully that cuts through the lowest cliff band and start the slog, go up through the gully (the steepest part) gain the upper ledges and route find up and leftward trending till you finally top out at the low point on the ridgeline at the southern end of the tower. It's about 1500 feet of elevation gain and takes one hour minimum.
