Description
Located in the eastern part of the San Rafael Desert and just outside the northwest side of the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, Head Spur is a distinct sandstone dome just north of the Hans Flat Ranger Station. This climb would make for a great moderate duet if you're already in the area climbing Cleopatra's Chair. The summit views of the nearby canyons and other domes are excellent and is worth the effort. Solitude is guaranteed.
Getting There
Unfortunately since the road has been closed, the approach hike is a bit long. From the Hans Flat Ranger Station, drive 3.6 miles north on the High Spur Road to a parking area on the left at the start of the closed road. A high clearance vehicle is highly recommended.
Hike ~3.7 miles to the south side of the formation. Near the end of the road, on the southeast side of Head Spur, hike up a wash to the base of the east face.
