Description

A broad limestone cliff band with routes up to 110 meters high overlooking the town of the same name. The published routes have some fixed gear but all seem to require a rack of some sort. Grades range from V to VII. The guide (Climbing in Chania) describes the descent as a rappel line in the middle of the cliff band but this seems improbable when approached from above. A walk off to the south into a ravine leads to a fixed rope hand rail and allows return to the base in 30 to 45 minutes. The cliffs are mostly west-facing and heat up rather quickly, so an early start is recommended. The reward is a trip to the beach at the base of the cliff band.

Getting There

Stavros is located at the northern tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula, perhaps a 45-minute drive from the city of Chania, which makes for an excellent base to explore this region. The car park is to the right of the public beach area at the beginning of a trail that wanders out around the end of the peninsula. A climber's trail quickly heads up the slope for 20-30 minutes to reach the cliffs.
