At the Wadi Rum entrance complex is a Tourism Police office. If you are climbing at Wadi Rum, you are supposed to register with the police and give them a photocopy of your passport. Bringing a spare photocopy to give them saves some time, as they don't have a photocopier of their own.
Description
Al Maghrar (Place of Caves) is located about 24km south of Wadi Rum Village. The area is remote and beautiful. The most famous route on the formation is the classic Desert Rats in the Shade (5.10+).This excellent route climbs a huge right-facing corner that can be seen from miles away. The formation and route are listed in Tony Howard's 1997 Wadi Rum guidebook.
Getting There
You'll need to hire a Bedouin driver to get you to this area. If you want to climb Desert Thief or Desert Rats in the Shade, you'll likely get dropped off a bit north of the main formation.
From where you'll likely be dropped off by a driver, you can see the huge Desert Rats in the Shade corner system. Hike up and slightly right on rock slabs thru a narrow gap in the rocks (there will be a stone hut on the left just before this gap that is used by the local Bedouin to store cheese). After going thru the narrow gap, drop down to a wash on the other side (150 yards). Go up the main drainage below the cliff until you can ascend talus to the base of the route. Total approach time is roughly 45 minutes.
The rough coordinates for Desert Rats in the Shade are 29.446535 35.316359.
