Description
The Montreal River separates WI from MI in the Western UP flowing from the metropolis of Ironwood/Hurley north into the big lake we call Gitchi Gummi. A crumbling cliff made of red and brown sandstones and mudstones rise up out of the lake to the east of the river and numerous climbs are found on any given year. A frozen Lake Superior is not 100% necessary, but it is the best way to enjoy the ice in this zone, as once you get about a mile east of the river, there is private property on top of every climb...
Getting There
From Ironwood, head West on Hwy 2 for 10 miles or so to the town of Saxon. Turn right (North) on WI122 for 4.2 miles, cross the river and take your first left into the parking lot for Superior Falls. Park at the Superior Falls parking area above the penstocks and Hydro plant and walk down the path to the lake. Once at the lake, take a right turn onto the frozen ice, and pick the first line you see, and go and get it!
