Description

Tragic Alley is a newly developed crag discovered by Tony Roberts and Erik Wenninger and consists of some of the cleanest basalt faces in the area. The wall currently hosts seven 40-50 foot sport routes as well as what may be the area's first documented multi-pitch sport route which ascends the main cliff band before heading into the more featured basalt above. This beautiful crag lies just above Pillar Falls on the north side of the Snake River Canyon, creating an aesthetic ambiance. The wall faces southwest (morning shade in summer and afternoon sun in winter). Due to the approach, this is not a place to bring small children or dogs.

Getting There

From stoplight north of Perrine Bridge, drive east 1.2 miles and park. Walk southwest to canyon rim, looking for large (~3-4 ft high rock cairn). You should be more or less across canyon from isolated house west of Evel Knevel ramp. Find lowest place along rim near gully (42.602865, -114.429322) and a small cairn. Once you are in the right spot, make a short (8-ft) easy downclimb to a shelf. From here, two options exist to get down to the crag (see photo):
1) At head of shelf is a 3-ft hole that marks the first tunnel of the gully downclimb. You will need to pull your pack in behind you. Make sure your hands are free. Continue down gully with one additional, but roomier tunnel. Near the bottom, carefully down climb east side of gully to base of cliff.
OR 2) about 15 feet east of this hole/gully is a small, flat platform with a fixed rap anchor (not visible from above) just below lip. One 30 m rap to base of cliff.
Once you are down gully or off rappel, follow trail east along base of wall. Head down to lower wall. Once you've got this approach dialed, its about a 10-15 minute approach from car.
