Itamonte in a city in the south region of Minas Gerais on the northern side of Serra da Mantiqueira, close to the border with Rio de Janeiro.
It's one of the "basecamps" to Itatiaia National Park and sorroundings visitors, wich is in the border between RJ and MG.
The area offers all climbing styles, from multipitch routes, sport crags and bouldering.
There are two local guidebooks, Guia da Reião de Itatiaia from Igor and Julio Spanner (
guiadoitatiaia.wixsite.com/…), and Planalto do Itatiaia and RJ and MG South Region by Eliseu Frechou and Felipe Guimarães.
Hostel Picus (www.picus.com.br) is a great climber's friendly place to stay. The owners are a friendly couple of local climbers. The place offers hostel, camping area, indoor climbing wall, cafe/bar, guide service and climbing courses.
Itamonte is a small town, there is no airport close by. Closest airports are Rio and São Paulo.
By car, 3-4 hour drive (240km) from Rio de Janeiro, 3-4 hour drive (270km) from São Paulo and 6 hour drive (530km) from Belo Horizonte.
