New black sand beach backed by short lava wall. Past the end of the road where lava took everything out in spring 2018. Not a climbing destination in itself, but very fun day hike.
As of autumn 2018: drive towards Pahoa town on road 130/ Pahoa Bypass Road. Go down Kahakai Blvd through the end of Hawaiian Beaches subdivision (15 mins). Turn right at the ocean onto Government Beach Road. Take the road until it ends in a wall of lava (15 mins). Follow the cairns over a'a lava towards the ocean with forest on your left (15 mins). The trail lets out onto a dirt road in the forest, follow this towards the lighthouse (20 mins). At the lighthouse turn right on the 4WD road towards the black sand beach (10 mins). Backing the beach is a short wall of a'a lava flow and a few freestanding boulders.
