Access Issue: 2024 Seasonal Raptor Closures
Details
From the Canyon Lakes Ranger District Forest Service:
Fort Collins, Colo. (March 7, 2024) – to protect nesting birds of prey, the U.S. Forest Service is implementing annual area closures in several popular recreation areas throughout the Canyon Lakes Ranger District. The closures include Triple Tier, south of CO Highway 14; Boston Peak, north of CO Highway 14; Grazing Allotment Crag, northwest of Prairie Divide Road; and Mt. Olympus, southeast of US Highway 34. See the closure map for more details. Effective through July 31, 2024, the closures protect established raptor territories to ensure the birds remain undisturbed during sensitive breeding and nesting seasons.
The Canyon Lakes Ranger District partners with Colorado Parks & Wildlife and the Northern Colorado Climbers Coalition to monitor nesting progress and to inform climbers about the importance of giving raptors space to raise their young.
Federal and state laws prohibit disturbing any nesting bird of prey. Visitors can help protect wildlife by respecting all closures. Signs will be posted at key access points into the closed areas. Additional closure information is available online.

Description
Sheep Mountain is a large crag complex well-documented in the new 2018 Poudre Canyon Guidebook with >200 routes and boulder problems. This area hosts routes from 5.7 to 5.13 with emphasis in the 5.10-5.11 range. The Skyline Boulders (developed in 2011) have problems in the V2-9 range. As usual, Steve McCorkel picked off some of the best looking lines at the crag early in the development while the majority of the ~150 other routes were development between 2011-2018 by the Paul Heyliger crew (G. Hand, T. Anderson, B. Austin, J. Brink, J. Dory, J. Durkin, ...).
The majority of the walls face south, so this is a great winter area. There are some long and multi-pitch routes, so a 70m is useful. Many of the routes require some trad gear, so bring a light rack. As with any new area, there is still a lot of loose rock. Bring and wear a helmet, especially belaying!

Getting There
Sheep Mountain is about 18.6 miles up the canyon. On the long curve in the road after entering the Narrows, park in a pullout below a scree slope on the north side of the road. There is another pullout down the road a few hundred yards. Walk up the road about 30 feet, and follow a well-cairned trail through the rock band. Please watch your step to avoid erosion issues on this steep trail. The hike is about 20 minutes to the Main Wall.
