Moon Boulder

N Carolina > 1. Southern Mou… > Looking Glass Rock > Looking Glass Boulders

Description

The moon boulder is one house sized boulder with a van sized boulder calved off of it. Located in a secluded forest location below the Sun Wall of Looking Glass, this boulder was discovered and cleaned off by locals a few years ago. Over a dozen routes with potential for more are characterized by eyebrow slopers, slopey crimps, tricky mantles, and great friction. The boulder is on the western slope of the Glass, so gets sun most of the day. Although the trees and various aspects provide shade. An ephemeral stream is located on the backside of the boulder and sometimes a stick bridge needs to be constructed to keep your pads dry. Some of the best problems, including Man in the Moon, are on this side of the boulder. If folks haven't been out there in a while, you may want to bring loppers and brushes to gussy up the problems.

Getting There

Begin at the Nose area trail and hike up a little more than 1/4 mile (about 3/4 of the way to the wall). Take a right on a faint (potentially very faint) trail where you see a large dead tree standing on the left and log water bar in the trail. Try to stay roughly on the same contour for another 1/4 mile and you should run right into the Moon boulder. The boulder is roughly below Tits and Beer. A photo of the GPS location and the turnoff on the trail is in the photos.
