Description
Birthday Boulder is quite possibly the best single block in the Steamboat Springs area. There are many classics on this glacial erratic perched on a broad ridge just above the Seedhouse Road dispersed camping area. Morning shade and afternoon sun allow one to climb in spring, summer, and fall.
Getting There
Take Seedhouse Road FR400 east from Clark. Just past the community of Hinman, the road will turn to dirt. Continue up the road about 1 mile to the east end of road 400-2C (dispersed camping loop). Park here, and cross the road (the boulder is very obvious when viewed from the road 100 yards west of here), pick up a faint trail just to the west of the parking area, and follow it through a meadow and climbs up through aspens. Shortly after climbing a steep section and crossing a seasonal brook, go off trail to the left, and climb up a short slope for 5 minutes. The boulder is on top of the slope and will not be visible from the main trail. If you reach a short crag with many easy routes and toprope anchors, you have gone too far.
