Description

This mostly sunny area has hundreds of sport routes spread across roughly 20 sectors. The area is known for having a large number (1-200) of easy to moderate sport climbs (4a-5c) and easy approaches. There are quite a few 2-3 pitch moderate sport climbs on the main escarpment as well has hundreds of single pitch routes.

For places to stay, there is the Kamp Tura Campground right in Vipava and many B&Bs, Farm Stays and other accommodations in Vipava, Slap and other nearby villages. There is a good-sized supermarket in Vipava and many eateries.

Not too far away (25-30 minute drive) is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skojan Caves. It is well worth a visit (do both Tours 1 & 2; takes about 3 hours total).

Just over the border in Gorica [Gorizia], Italy is a large mall on the N side of the motorway that houses a huge grocery store (IperCoop) and the outdoor retailer, Decathlon. Decathlon sells a limited amount of climbing (shoes, rope, QDs, chalk, etc), camping and outdoor gear. There are Decathlons all over Italy and they are a cross between REI and Big 5 Sporting Goods.

If driving from Italy or elsewhere into Slovenia, make sure that you obtain a vignette (sticker) for your car. This can be purchased at gas stations or rest stops before or right as you enter Slovenia. Further into the country, you'll go through tool booths, where police will be looking for the stickers. If you don't have one, you'll pay a hefty fine.

Getting There

There are two main areas that are both close to the town of Vipava.

One area, on the river Bella, is located a few minutes drive NNW of downtown Vipava. This area is in the shade in the late afternoon, although trees at the base provide some shade throughout the day. From Vipava, drive up a canyon on the left (W) end of the escarpment through the town of Vrhpolje  toward the hamlet of Sanabor. As you wind up the canyon, you'll see a wooden sign and parking area on the right. Next to the wooden sign is a 4x4 post with a climber access symbol. From the parking spot, follow the trail steeply down a set of steps  to a horizontal path. To the right a few meters are some hard routes; to the left a short distance is a sport crag with close to 100 routes of all grades. Most routes have small, triangular name plates with a grade. If you continue on this left path beyond the cliff, you'll intersect a trail that will lead you down to the Bella river and another crag with harder climbs. Total approach time is 3-10 minutes, depending which crag you go to.

The other, more popular area, is on the main escarpment located above town and the motorway. It is slightly NE of downtown. This area is in the shade in the morning and is reached from the vicinity of the Kamp Tura Campground in Vipava.

The UK Climbing Forum has hundreds of routes listed at all these sectors.
