1 hour approach time with 300 m vertical gain. Remote, with sometimes fragile rock and ice on the walls, tighter stone on the blocks.
Three, 5 pitch wall routes have been established in recent years, and an older one by the late Bryan Silker, that ascend the entire limestone and Dolomite formation. The rock types and the verticality required expert skill and helmets.
Teton Valley Arete, III 5 11c R is the Silker Route. 40m right, NW, of Boy Scout Coulior. 2 pitches in steep limestone, with some bolts but very trad, before the better dolomite is reached, and the name sake Arête. A last pitch in the cap rock to the forest above. A variation in the dolomite to the south of arete is Mandatory Air a 5.12 ** roof crack.
Moonrise Kingdom III 5.11c on the right wall. A wide limestone flake and face to start. Then 2 better protected face pitches. Then the dolomite band with 3, 5.11 variations. Including the White Screen: 5.11b ***
The Dog Wall: III 5.12c **** In the back of the Cirque, the big black roof atop the wall is the crux last pitch and unmistakable. The white, left facing corner and 2 face pitches, all 5.11, is the warm up below.
The Right Dog Wall: IV 5.11 A3
Skier’s also ascend the cirque; some utilizing a technical traverse along the strata from east to west. Most however ascend the Boy Scout Coulior a NE aspect hallway on the west side.
For the big wall routes; hike through the scout’s shooting range and trail south to the desired route on the west side of the creek. This is the winter way.
