Description

Chilao is one valley south of Horse Flats and has two campground loops, two group camping loops, a fire station, some private ranches, an old school, some abondonded government buildings, and some choss.

There are a couple boulders near the fire station, a handful in the Manzanita Loop, but most of the climbs are in Alder Creek at the Sandy Bottom Boulders or past them.

In the winter Chilao is the only campground open up the 2, so if you don't like the winter approach to Horse Flats, and you don't want to go to Malibu, and Stoney is wet, and you don't like Rubidoux, then here might be an option for you! Alder Creek will be running if there was recently rain or snow.

From the Angeles Crest Highway wikipedia, "Construction of Angeles Crest Highway began in 1929. It was originally intended to be a fire access road. In 1941 construction stopped because of World War II. In 1946, after the war, construction resumed; the completed highway eventually opened in 1956. The road was constructed by prison labor from Camp 37, which has since been razed.  Division of Highways (now known as CalTrans) staff lived at a site called Cedar Springs. The staff is now located at Chilao Flats. Children of the staff attended Chilao Mountain School, a one-room school; the school has been closed for several years.
Angeles Crest Highway was originally planned to be upgraded to a freeway in the 1950s, but was later considered geographically improbable and the plans were abandoned."

Getting There

From La Canada head north on the 2.  The turn off for Chilao is about 25 miles up the road.

There are some boulders in the Manzanita Loop campground, and some near the Fire Station, but most of the stuff is in the Creek.
