Description
Largest section of Main Wall with a great selection of routes including some of Mt Erie's most Classic. Zig Zag is one of the most popular routes here with two or three quality pitches no harder than 5.7 and the potential to climb additional routes off of it. To clear up any possible confusion about where the routes start, Constant Velocity, Redemption, American Warrior and Power Struggle are all single pitch climbs that begin on top of the Snag Buttress. You can easily get there by climbing the first 2 or 1 & 1/2 pitches of Zig Zag depending on how you pitch it out. The second pitch of On Eagles' Wings, Wingrider, Clipped My Wings and Spring Board begin on a ledge that Zig Zag finishes at making them great add-ons.
There is a history of confusion when it comes to the geographical organization of Main Wall West and the Snag Buttress. Technically speaking most of Zig Zag and its alternate starts are physically apart of the Buttress. For whatever reason this is how the guide books have organized the area and to mitigate further confusion this page will follow suit.
Getting There
Located directly above Snag Buttress, this area is best approached by climbing Zig Zag or one of the other routes at the base of the wall. Routes on the left side of the wall can be accessed from the first anchors of Zig Zag, where as those on the right side require climbing either the second pitch of Zig Zag of Snag Buttress Direct.
