Description

Moderately sized black granite boulder, approx 10 feet tall with three climbable faces. Clean and sound with little to no moss, no loose or crumbly areas, and grittty sticky granite. Landings are relatively flat and clear of obstructions. Uphill face provides easy route back off.
Left face (looking uphill) is slightly less than vertical and has two lines of deep hand cracks. Downhill face has slight overhang and gritty slopers. Right face has shallow finger cracks and more challenging routes up.
Be wary of black bears throughout the park, and since this trail is used by mountain bikers who may not see you as they come around switchbacks - try to not block the trail.

Getting There

Within Paugnut State Forest.
Enter from the north side of the park on Guerdat Road, get out of your car and walk south down Buttrick Road - old and rubbelized asphalt road covered in pine needles, low tick exposure access. Follow Buttrick Road for about 3/4 mile until there is a 4-way junction before it starts to steeply go downhill. At this junction, make a right onto the obvious but unblazed forest trail. Within about 100 feet, turn left and follow the unblazed trailrunner/mountain bike trail as it zigzags downhill for about a half mile and it will be on your right (trail run project calls this a black-diamond route “Whipping Post”)

Alternately - park at the lot for the bike path at junction of Winsted Road and Harris Drive. Cross Winsted road and go uphill from the bottom of Buttrick Road about 3/4 mile and once you make it to the top of the hill at a 4-way junction, turn left and follow the original route.
