Access Issue: Portal Road Closure Details
Due to rockfall, duration unknown
Moonstone Buttress is the striking, triangular white wall visible high and right of the Whitney Portal Buttress. Unlike many formation in the Portal, the Moonstone Buttress offers a real, pointy summit and a distinct alpine feel. This 900-1000 foot buttress is home to at least 6 routes, 4 of which are well documented in the Croft/Lewis Bishop Area Rock Climbs. There are a couple newer routes on the right.
Approach as for the Whitney Portal Buttress, starting on the main hiking trail and heading uphill at the first switchback. Head right along the base of the Portal Buttress and start ascending the gully to its right. Partway up this gully, you'll want to cross over to slabs on the right. It gets quite brushy at this point. A nice bivy site can be found at the base of the wall. Allow 75 minutes for the approach.
