Wishing Well Boulder and Surrounding

Arkansas > Cowell Area

Description

This is a massive boulder tucked into the woods, surrounded by some semi decent other boulders. This thing is huge and has enough perfect sandstone holds for two massive boulder problems.  All I can say is bring plenty of pads, and your first time out, probably a rope to clean the top. it's all been brushed before, but probably hasn't been touched in a while.

There are also several other boulders in the area. mostly easy to moderate and mediocre looking, but would be a fun way to get the hang of developing. there could possibly even be some short sport routes around, but DO NOT BOLT THIS BOULDER.

Getting There

After turning on Cowell Road (1204) from HWY 7, go about 3.2 miles. there will be a turn on your right while the road curves to the left. Go a mile or so down this decent dirt road until you see a huge hunting campsite on the right (can't miss it). You can park here if it's empty, or immediately after that, there is a right turn to a gated, closed forestry road.

Getting to the boulder: There are two ways to approach it and I'm not sure which one is best. get the coordinates to the boulder from here, and approach one of the following ways:

1. (recommended as to not disturb hunters if they are present at the camp site) follow the gated road down a little less than a quarter mile. pay attention to the gps, and cut right at the appropriate longitude, cross a small runoff creek, keep traversing the hillside til you see the boulder.

2. (maybe easier) head to the back of the campsite. on the south side there is the remnants of a logging road that heads west that you can follow almost all the way to the boulder, but it's a bit overgrown and bushwhacky. again, pay close attention to your gps to ensure you are headed the right way

Once you get to where you can see the boulder, you can traverse the top of the small cliff til you find the downclimb, just north of the massive boulder.
