Description

Rocky Canyon is located in the Northern Bridger Range on the south face of Blacktail Mountain, approximately 25 miles north of Bozeman. The lower canyon (where much of the limited development has taken place) features limestone walls of varying sizes, from boulders to 25 meter faces. Much of the rock is friable limestone, and climbers need be wary of loose holds and chossy 'kitty-litter' sections on the flanks of some routes.

This area does not appear to see much traffic nor much development. It is only mentioned briefly in the Dockins and Kalakay guide as an area with development potential but few established routes.  There are 5 bolted climbs on the Mushroom Wall as of 2018, and most walls have easy access to the top, but long slings and static lines are necessary for anchors elsewhere.

Getting There

From Bozeman, take 19th North out of town until it becomes Springhill Road. Continue on Springhill for 12-15 miles until it turns into gravel as Rocky Mountain Road. Follow this through several big turns and past Morgan Lane to Morgan Cemetery on the right. Park in front of or just past the cemetery.

From the parking area, traverse the fence North of the cemetery and hike East on the 4x4 trail towards the obvious Rocky Canyon. The trail continues slightly uphill for about 1/2 mile until it passes next to the Mushroom Wall on the left.
