Description

Dramatic intimidating mountains -- more serious steep peaks than any range in USA -- but with huts and asphalt access roads. Sort of like Chamonix Mont Blanc almost no mechanical lifts, and much less sophisticated civlization nearby.

Great for alpine ice/snow couloirs and mixed routes, where to go if looking for wilder and more remote alpine than Mont Blanc (and often drier sunnier weather).
Famous alpine peaks include the Barre des Ecrins, the Pelvoux, and the Ailefroide.

Lots of great single- and multi-pitch bolted rock routes nearby on variety of interesting rock types in the Haut Durance / Briancon valley.

Now some English-language guidebooks.

Some good alpine rock routes, but overall need to more choosy about rock quality than around Mont Blanc. Some good alpine rock areas are the AIguille de Sialouze and S ridge of the Petit Pelvoux.
. . . (nearby over on the west "Oisans" side are the south face of the Meije and the Rateau, and the Aiguille Dibona area).

Getting There

These mountains are west from the Route National main highway (two-lane) running N-S between cities of Briancon and Embrun. Briancon can be reached by highways from Grenobie (over the Col du Lauteret pass) and Torino (over the Col de Montgenevre pass). Embrun can be reached from Gap and Marseille or Nice.
There is also passenger rail service from Marseille to Embrun and Nice.
