Description

Located in Golden Gate Heights, Rock Outcrop Park (ROP) offers a handful of climbs with climbs with exquisite views of West San Francisco/Pacific Ocean.

ROP, offers a handful of short routes that can double as boulder problems.

What you should bring: slings, 50m rope (minimum length), 1-2 crash pads (max).

Rock is very coarse and brittle, expect cracks, crimpy holds, high winds and loose/falling rock.

There are two brand new bolts on top of the main wall (highest boulder on the hill), which can be approached from behind via Ortega road. There is also an old piton and bolt on top of the slightly smaller cliff west of the main wall near the road and telephone poll.

Getting There

To get to Rock Outcrop Park from San Francisco drive north on i-280 N (towards Golden Gate Bridge), merge onto highway 1, continue on i-1 until it merges to 19th Ave (Past San Francisco State University). Drive down 19th for a couple miles then turn right onto Rivera St, continue until you have reached 14th Ave and make a left. By now you should be driving up some steep hills. Stay on 14th for a couple minutes, Rock Outcrop Park will be on the right off a residential narrow road.

Once parked the cove of the crag can be approached via 14th ave, just hike up the small hill into the obvious cove. The approach for the bolts can be made via Ortega st.

This place is terrible and should not be climbed. Toilet Mind 5.11 is the "best" route here Jun 6, 2018

Great views, bad climbing. Some sizable loose chunks are an incident waiting to happen. Best to avoid climbing here, especially since its a sensitive area with no defined trails and is home to at least one endangered butterfly. Oct 13, 2018
