Getting weather forecast...

Description

The rocky summit area of Mt Chocorua, visible most especially from Rt 16 but from many vantage points throughout the White Mtns, really does have technical climbing. Not exactly your "Belay off the bumper" approach, you'll have to hike to the summit area choosing one of the many trails...and which part of the summit area you want to climb on may affect which trail you take.

For the "Northeast" Corner Cracks and Slabs the Piper Trail may be the best approach.

For the "Southeast Ridge" ("white streak") and/or the "100 ft slab" the Liberty Trail offers the minimal altitude gain (about 2000 ft) and miles.

The four sub-areas are listed Left-to-Right (or counter-clockwise around the summit block): 1. 100-ft wall, 2. SE Ridge, 3. East Face, and 4. NE Slabs and Corner Cracks

Getting There

Once the initial hiking approach has been completed, thrash about in the bushes to find the sub-area and climb of interest. This may vary from just a hundred feet of relatively easy bush for the "100 ft slab", to several hundred feet of "sterner stuff".

NOTE: GPS marker on this map is set for the actual summit, the individual sub-areas have their own GPS markers on the map.
