Description Suggest change

Not sure at the moment what the correct name for this wall is...

This trad/TR cliff is up and right (ENE) of Castle Menzies, between the two sport climbing areas within Weem. The hiking trail up to the historic Saint David's Well passes over the top of this crag and the summit of the crag has been cleared to provide a viewpoint along the trail to/from the well.

There are at least nine routes here, one of the best being a steep finger crack on the left side. All routes can be top roped; bring an anchor rope if you wish to do this.

Getting There Suggest change

Turn off the main road at signs for Castle Menzies and Weem Wood. Drive in on a paved road about 50 yards then turn right (to the left goes to the Castle) and drive a couple hundred yards on a dirt road to a parking lot with picnic tables and an interpretive sign.

In the right (NE) corner of the car park is an interpretive sign. Two trails leave from here - an old road that goes to the right (E) and is relatively flat, and a steeper trail that initially goes up and left (NW). Both trails will lead to the same spot (a three-way trail junction), but the righthand (old road) route is a bit easier.

Follow the old road eastward as it contours across the slope just above some houses. In about 200 yards, you'll reach a trail intersection. Take the uphill (left) option and go uphill to another, three-way trail junction.

From this three-way trail junction, you can see the crag in the woods about 40 yards up and left (NW). Either diagonal up and left from the junction to the base of the cliff (vague path/40 yards) or follow the uphill trail to the clearing atop the cliff. This clearing has a nice view of the valley.

Routes are described from left (W) to right (E) when viewed from the bottom of the cliff. Total approach time is about 10 minutes from the Castle Menzies car park.

The routes on the right tend to be down-sloping and a bit dirty, so it might be worth rapping down your chosen route to tiddy it up a bit first.
