Big Kangaroo is the high point (8,280' elevation) of Kangaroo ridge, a ridgeline running north from Gilbert mountain and Kangaroo pass for 3 miles before terminating near Le Petit Cheval alongside highway 20. The west side is easily visible from highway 20. The south face is not visible from the highway and requires a longer, steeper approach than many climbs at Washington pass, and therefore is not frequently visited.

Camping is possible in the massive boulders below the face, but water is difficult to find in late season.

WEST FACE: Park at the hairpin. There are 2 major gullies coming down from the summit. cross the creek, and walk through the forest uphill until entering one of these gullies and follow to the summit notch.

SOUTH FACE: Park at the highway 20 hairpin. Hike southeast on the right side of the creek, on a trail that that improves on the other side of several slide areas/boulder fields. after 40 minutes you will enter a meadow, look left uphill for a lowpoint on the ridge. follow one of 3 gullies that lead directly uphill for roughly 2,800'. once at the notch, drop down the other side a few hundred feet, and traverse across the slopes heading north until you reach the base of the wall. Approach time seems to be anywhere from 2.5 to 5 hours depending on conditions and fitness level.
