Ardnamurchan Ring Area

International > Europe > United Kingdom > Scotland > Lowland Outcrops

Description

Beautiful mountain scrambles and cragging can be found in this area, which is a bit north of the village of Kilochoan and near the westernmost point of the UK. The area is a couple hours drive WSW of Fort William and a short ferry ride from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Getting There

From the small village of Kilochoan, follow road signs toward Sanna. The drive from the Kilochoan Hotel in Kilochoan to the parking spot for the crag takes about 15 minutes. The road is paved, but narrow single track. Park on the left, just after the few houses of Achnaha and before a bridge over a creek.

The crags can be seen from the road, on the hillside of the leftmost of several hills/small mountains that make up part of the Ardnamurchan Ring. From the parking spot by the bridge, walk along the right bank of the stream about 5-10 minutes to another stream. Cross this (stepping stones at low water, wading at higher water) then turn right and wander across the frequently boggy heather over a small ridge and up to the crags. Total approach time takes about 20-30 minutes and gains maybe 200 feet in elevation.
