Jawbone

New Mexico > Albuquerque Area > Sandia Mountains > Pino Wall & Jawbone

Description

Jawbone lies to the south of the upper tram terminal and to the west of the ridge crest.

Entering this area affords relatively close-up views to parts of the Sandias not normally seen from the more common climbing areas of the Sandias.  Still, one might want check whether one has "rough adventure" in one's lexicon before heading into this area. :)

Getting There

This is a complex area.

Jawbone can be accessed from above or below.  Approaches include starting from Elena Gallegos Picnic Area, the Lower and Upper Tram Terminals, and the Crest parking lot.

When accessing NW-side climbs from below, consider hiking up TWA Canyon and cutting over and up off-trail to the minor ridge that extends WSW of Jawbone.  Or go higher in the canyon before heading up towards Jawbone; just beware that there is a cliff band to the NW of Jawbone that is difficult to get around if wanting to reach or even see Jawbone itself.  I'd guess 2 or 3 hours to approach this way from below.

From below and for SE-side climbs, one might be able to approach from Elena Gallegos Picnic Area via trails and paths further south, though I have not tried from that direction.

For approaching from above, see the Pino Wall & Jawbone page.  At the saddle in the ridge crest, head down on good game trails to the ridge leading out to Jawbone; this ridge ends in a 35m rap from a large tree.  This may take an hour to get to the rap tree.   And the last bit before the tree is somewhat exposed 4th class.  Continue down to your destination, though from the notch I have only ever gone down to the northwest.
